José Hernández (right), former NASA astronaut, receives an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Dr. David Lopez (left), president of The National Hispanic University. “Our students, alumni and faculty are committed to improving the human and social condition by creating and applying ideas to promote the development of individuals, communities, and organizations, as well as society as a whole,” said Dr. Lopez, who commended Hernández for his efforts to do the same through his commitment to higher education, his career as an astronaut and his nonprofit organization, Reaching for the Stars Foundation. Nearly 100 students, cheered on by their family members, graduated on May 14 with degrees in business administration, computer science, education, liberal studies, math and science and other academic areas.
