At the National Hispanic University, commencement ceremonies are joyful, memorable occasions in which we recognize the achievements of our students and the cultural diversity of our institution.

Save the Date—May 11, 2013

On Saturday, May 11, 2013, we will celebrate this remarkable milestone for the Class of 2013 and their families and friends with a special commencement ceremony.

Henry Cisneros

Henry Cisneros, an accomplished American politician and businessman and the first Hispanic mayor of a major U.S. city (San Antonio), will deliver this year’s commencement address.


Are you graduating this May?

If you anticipate graduating this year, check your email for details about filing for graduation and diplomas. If you have not done so already, submit your Petition to Graduate form to your advisor ASAP!

Commencement Awards Call for Nominations

Each year, NHU recognizes the contributions of our new graduates, faculty, and staff through a number of annual awards. Please help us honor the accomplishments of our university community by submitting your nominations no later than Thursday, April 18!

This year’s honors include:

  • Outstanding Staff Award (S.T.A.R. Award)
  • Outstanding Faculty Award
  • President’s Award for Exemplary Student Achievement
  • President’s Si Se Puede Award
  • La Familia Award

Awards will be presented as part of our commencement weekend, at our Awards Dinner on Friday, May 10 and our commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11.

Graduation Regalia and Orders

Through Jostens, you can order your graduation regalia as well as invitations, announcements, and class rings. The deadline to order is Thursday, March 28, 2013. To place your orders:

  1. Go to www.jostens.com.
  2. Click on the “Find Your School” button at the top.
  3. Enter The National Hispanic University or click here.

*** Important*** The deadline to order all regalia online without incurring a $10 rush fee is March 28, 2013. After March 28, students will have to call 1-800-854-7464 and order by May 2. After May 2, no orders will be taken.

It is the student’s responsibility to order his or her graduation items. Keep in mind shipping time allowances. You may access the Jostens’ website (www.jostens.com) for more information. Note: Graduation items may appear silver in color on the website, but when ordered, items will be the standard colors for NHU, which are on file with Jostens.

Graduation Program

Names of all graduates will appear in the graduation program in alphabetical order as they appear in our student information system unless we are given prior notice. Please let us know if you do not want your name to appear in the program by Friday, April 5, 2013.

Photographs

Individual Portraits: Individual graduation photos will not be taken at commencement. It is your responsibility to contact your preferred vendor to have portraits taken.

Group Photos: A group photo will be taken on Saturday, May 11, at 9:15 a.m. Additional instructions will be provided when you arrive for commencement.

Important Dates

Graduation Rehearsal: Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 4:30 p.m. at Bustos Plaza
It is very important that you attend the rehearsal.

Awards Dinner: Friday, May 10, 2013. Location to be determined.

Commencement Day Schedule:

  • 8:45–9:15 a.m.—Registration and continental breakfast

  • 9:15 a.m.—Group photo session, location to be determined

*Commencement Day Parking—Please encourage your families and guests to arrive by 8:30 a.m. Parking lots will open at that time and spaces are limited; street parking will also be available.

Diplomas

Graduates must submit a Conferral of Degree form, available at Student Services, in order to process their degree or certificate and order the diploma or certificate. The Conferral of Degree form may be submitted within or after the final academic term as long as requirements have been fulfilled.Students without a Conferral of Degree form on file will not be awarded their degree until the form is submitted. Submit this form to the Office of the Registrar. You will be contacted by the Office of the Registrar once the diplomas are ready.

Once a student completes all course requirements and submits a Conferral of Degree form, undergraduate and graduate students will be charged the $50 graduation fee; students in the Translation and Interpretation certificate program will pay a $25 fee. These fees cover the administrative costs to process your your diploma or certificate.
